Sign up for 'Weird Pets & Their Owners': Co-hosted with Citla from The Sketchbook Games
Join Citla and me on Monday 12th May at 7pm GMT/8pm CEST for a fun sketching session which will be focused on weird pets & owners
Hello Flock Friends,
I’m excited to share that we have a BONUS live drawing date this month in collaboration with
from The Sketchbook Games. The live event is available to all subscribers, and the replay and image references to download are for Creative Flock and Sketchbook Games members. If you’re unfamiliar with The Sketchbook Games, I encourage you to check it out. Citla shares her journey of building an illustration portfolio, the highs, the lows, and everything in between, and invites you to be part of it. It’s an inspiring space for artists and illustrators, full of honest insights, helpful advice, and encouragement drawn from her own experience.
I had a lovely chat with Citla when we were preparing for this session, and we discussed the importance of owning the WEIRD in our art practice. As creatives, we do our best work when we fully embrace our quirks and share our passions with the world.
So, in line with Citla’s ‘Pet’ themed month, we landed on the idea of drawing weird pets & owners (or weird owner and pets?) Let’s see how the session turns out!
Simply sign up via the Luma link and you’ll receive updates by email.
Weird Pets & Their Owners - Monday 12th May 7pm BST/ 8pm CEST
(Live session available for all Creative Flock/Sketchbook Games subscribers. Replay and image access after the session - members only)
What to expect from the session:
This drawing session is unguided, which means we won’t be teaching you step-by-step techniques, this is a space where we draw/paint/create whilst hanging out with other creative folks and chatting (this bit is optional, you don’t even need to have your camera on if you’d prefer).
What these sessions provide are golden opportunities to take time out to draw for yourself, in the company of others and through that process, learn and develop.
To start, we will work fast with images of unconventional pets to warm our hands and pencils, then we will increase the timer with portraits of weird pets and their owners.
Tips:
During the warm-up, we’ll be drawing for 2-3 minutes per image. If this feels daunting, try using a simple, agile medium such as charcoal, soft pencil or ink and Chinese brush. Don’t worry about colour and detail, or about creating a perfect likeness of the pet. This part of the session is about warming up your hand and brain to draw and familiarising yourself with the subject.
Approach the session in a way that works for you, don’t worry about making mistakes, it’s all part of the learning process. Most importantly, have fun! 😀
Timings:
The session runs for 1 hour 30mins, we will start with quick drawings to warm up, then increase the timings.
We’ll finish drawing by 8.15pm BST/9.15pm CEST, then there will be a chance to share your work (only if you want to, there is no pressure to share), aim to finish by 8.30pm BST/9.30pm CEST at the latest.
If you would like to share your work on Substack or Instagram:
You can share by starting a new chat thread after the session, or if you’re a Notes user, you’re also welcome to share there, tag me in and i’ll re-stack.
On Instagram, tag me @emmaillustrates or @citlaflor and we’ll share to our stories.
The session is recorded and a replay will be available after the session, usually within 24 hours, sometimes 48 depending on the day we hold the session.
Any questions, please reply to this post or drop me an email contact@emmacarpendale.co.uk
We look forward to drawing with you! 😀
