VIDEO: Swatching the Winter Birds palette
I used Cass Art smooth hot pressed watercolour paper 300gsm to test these paints. This heavyweight, smooth paper is currently my preferred for watercolours, although I do also use my Pith sketchbook and loose paper for small studies.
Here is a description of the palette with information about each of the colours, taken from the Deep Light website:
Winter bird collection was inspired by birds that do not migrate to the south during the cold season in the Baltics. When everything in nature is monochrome birds are the ones that really stand out and look incredibly bright. When colors are mixed we get a winterly pastel palette that was our initial intention for the winter collection.
This set can be used as the only set you need for your winter nature explorations. Or it can be used with other watercolors if you want to mute colors down.
Great tit (warm yellow)
Bullfinch (soft red)
Forest pigeon (pale blue)
Green woodpecker (green with a yellow hint)
Partridge (warm brown)
Raven (blackish black)
As some of my subscribers will know, I recently become a brand ambassador for Deep Deep Light Watercolours. You can read more about my interest in these paints and an unboxing video here:

I’ll be creating new swatch videos for each palette and sharing them in The Creative Flock over the coming months. If there is a particular palette or colour you would like to see, please let me know in the comments.
