Hi Judith, it sounds like you’re approaching the challenge in a way that’s right for you and that’s perfect in my book 👌
Not sharing on socials is so liberating! But I’ve committed to sharing my attempts this year so I’ll stick with it 🫣
Thank you for your comment on my sketch! I occasionally enjoy combining them into panels, it produces something new and unexpected and sometimes better than the original! A bit Dadaesque!
Your inky sketches look gorgeous! And somewhat mysterious too, which seems a great match for folktales. Looking forward to see what you will make this year! I’m joining folktale week, but I’m taking my own approach. I had an idea for a picture book just a few days before the prompts were announced, so I’m making a little dummy book with sketches rather than following the prompts. I’m having a lot of fun with it, but it does take a lot of time. As I’m not a professional illustrator but a hobbyist, I sometimes wonder why I do this, especially during the second part of a project when the novelty has worn off, but I guess I like a challenge (even when I don’t follow the rules but make my own).
Hi Linda! Absolutely love your work so I’m VERY excited to see your folktale/picture book illustrations!
Thank you for your kind comment! I’ll probably be going for a mysterious, inky feel again this year, its what I feel most comfortable with and will go well with the story I’ve written. Will reveal more tomorrow!
I’m a rebel with these challenges too which is why I often struggle to fully complete them! 😆 making up your own rules with them is completely valid 👍
I was not going to join folktale week this year, for those reasons you mentioned and because I have other things I really want to focus on... But, like an easily distracted puppy, I've now jumped into that exciting puddle full of creative people. (I think my metaphor broke down there somewhere...) I've even written my own folktale. 😏
Wow Robyn, congratulations on penning your folk tale! It's so hard thing to resist the temptation of joining in, isn't it? But as long as you do it in the way you want and it doesn't cause you stress, then go for it! Btw, I loved a bit of mixed metaphor, especially when it combines puppies and puddles ;)
May I ask what medium (media?) you used in your previous Folktale Week sketches (in this post)? They are lovely. I love how they look wet/inky but aren't necessarily super dark in value.
Hi Heather, thank you for asking, it’s Diamine ink which is my fave ink brand, I think I used the Grey colour in those sketches, adding a bit of water to dilute it when needed. I find a little goes a long way with Diamine inks.
Thanks for the reminder about folktale week! I'm spending less time on IG now that I am over here on substack--but Folktale week is an excellent reason to tune in again over there. Thanks also for the amazing resources! I didn't know about the candlelit podcast--looks delicious. Congrats on your bravery--everything you create is most certainly shareworthy!
Hi Nina, thank you for your reply! Will you be joining in with Folktale Week?
You’re right, even if you’re not creating in response to the prompts, it’s a great time to pop over to IG to see what others are creating.
I hope you enjoy the podcast! I’ll be popping it on this whilst I’m sketching. Thank you for your kind comment, I’m still worried my story wont amount to much this year, but determined to give it a go, what’s the worst that can happen! 🫣
I would love to join. Not a writer but could be good to get out of my comfort zone. I lay keep the work to myself rather than share on the socials.
Just wanted to say I am in love with the first piece you show in this post. Love the feel of panels.

It is a very hard thing to resist. But yes, note-to-self: keep it fun and stress-free!
I do love mixing metaphors, I don't care what English teachers think. 😏

Thanks so much for letting me know! I will have to check out Diamine ink.
Let me know how you get on with it 😊

No I'm afraid I won't be joining in--not as brave as you! 😉 Just a gawker here....
Haha! Gawk away, i'm happy to be sharing my progress with you 😊
