This month i’ve delved deeply into the subject of witchcraft and lots of things have piqued my interest but visually I have been drawn to the magical elements of Earth, Wind, Fire and Water and the idea of animal ‘allies’ or ‘familiars’ and how these might intersect.

I’ve chosen the Earth element for this drawing session, but I found lots of other reference material for the other elements and it’s definitely something I want to build on as a creative project.

What I’m planning is for us to choose a main image featuring a person, and then animal image and combine the two into one drawing. So we’ll be creating an image of the witch and her familiar.

Here’s a selection of the images I’ve pulled together for the session, we won’t be drawing them all, i’ll take a consensus tomorrow and decide which ones we prefer.

I’ll share my screen during the session (and they’ll be shared on the replay video), so you don’t need to download the images unless you want to. If you’d prefer to see them in more detail, click on the image then right-click to download or save.

Timings: 

7-8.30pm drawing, plus approx 10min to share at the end (optional).

I’ve extended the time of this session a little, to allow for everyone to join, do a warm-up drawing and have enough time to draw from the photo sets.

There will be x1 10min warm up drawing, then we’ll pick x2 main images to draw and x2 animals.

Aim to finish drawing by 8.30pm, then there will be a chance to share your work at the end, aim to finish by 8.45pm at the latest. 

The live drawing sessions are unguided, which means I won’t be teaching you step-by-step techniques, it’s a space where we draw/paint/create whilst hanging out and chatting (this bit is optional, you don’t even need to have your camera on if you’d prefer). 

What these sessions provide are golden opportunities to take time out to draw for yourself and through that process learn and develop.
